“I have called on the Goddess and found her within myself”
― Marion Zimmer Bradley

Just gonna jump right into the marrow of this post by saying some words about how frustrated I am with the rampant misogyny in both genealogy and genetics.

I am so freaking upset that a woman, in her pedigree, prove her lineage through a man. Like, uh, douche canoes, I get your all excited about you Y DNA, and how all your man-ancestors spread their legacy across the land. Oh, maybe, you are hoping that your DNA will prove that you are the right and honorable heir of some royalty somewhere (p.s. – these dudes are almost always trying to prove how freaking WHITE they are), and a whole nation of people will rejoice for you.

And look, I’m just a hobby geneticist. Right now I have neither the money, nor the time, to go back to school and get the eleventy billion degrees I want. So I avail myself of peer reviewed research, sprinkled with a dash of online lectures, paired with asking geneticist friends a crapton of questions. It is my desire to be informed on this topic, as it is a magical world of never ending beauty.

So let me pause for a second and just say a small profound thing.

All life is beautiful. All of it.

Period. End of story. Over and out.

Yes, I understand the science of why you need to know the particulars of gendered (sexed? biological) ancestry charts. And, yes, I know why a more female oriented option is still “in research.” So, fine man, please do not “little lady” me about how you are so smart in the topics of genealogy and pedigree. I will literally school you.

What you are doing in these, “You cannot come into this genealogy group with the DNA of a male in your family,” groups is preventing women from finding information about their ancestors. But more importantly, with your control freak “No Girls Allowed” mentality, you are keeping women and children from learning important information about their genetics. And not just about eye color, if you flush after drinking alcohol, or think cilantro tastes like soap — but practical knowledge that could save the life of a child, an Aunt, someone’s Mom…or even your precious fragile Male Lineage.

“She is so bright and glorious that you cannot look at her face or her garments for the splendor with which she shines. For she is terrible with the terror of the avenging lightning, and gentle with the goodness of the bright sun; and both her terror and her gentleness are incomprehensible to humans…. But she is with everyone and in everyone, and so beautiful is her secret that no person can know the sweetness with which she sustains people, and spares them in inscrutable mercy.”
― Hildegard von Bingen

In case you didn’t know, Dude Bro, uh — bruh — where to you think your genetic material turns into another human anyway?

I’ll wait right here until you figure it out…

Before Samhain I want to find as much information on all the women who came before me. Sadly their histories and legacies are locked behind the walls of men who have little, tiny – almost microscopic – brains.

Now that it’s Sun sign Scorpio season, the veils are thinning, and Mercury throwing shade…it seems a quiet revolution has begun stirring in my soul. It is time to remember our Grandmothers – all of them – and honor their struggles as they worked hard to get us all to this point.

May the Light shine; may all be revealed,
Kim

Happy World Photography Day, y’all! Here are two of my most favorite humans in the world allowing me to take photos of them.

Two posts in one day…that might just be a record for me.
